I have my kids' report cards in hand today. One of them has a theme, wending its way through their teachers' notes, whispering at the margins. "x needs to take more risks"
And, truthfully, participating with one's class in a safe environment is not much of a risk.
But to those whose perfectionism shouts loud, the risk of being wrong in front of other people feels momentous. And yet, how otherwise can we grow? How can we learn if we're so afraid to make mistakes?
That's why I'll say to my friends and readers the same thing I say to my kid and to myself: "It doesn't have to be perfect the first time. Or even the second. All you have to do is celebrate your try."
So I hope you celebrate your try today.
